How to judge the performance of shock absorbers?

Jan 05, 2022

The working performance of the shock absorber can be judged by the following methods:

1. The feeling of riding

The working performance of the shock absorber can be judged based on the comparison with the vibration feeling of the new car. Under normal circumstances, after a vehicle passes over bumps or pits at a certain medium speed, the vehicle body will inevitably produce bumps and vibrations. When the shock absorber fails, or the shock absorber is normal and the spring is soft, the vibration of the body is too large. If the vibration does not stop for a long time, it can be considered that the shock absorber's damping efficiency has decreased or failed. Otherwise, it is normal.

2. Shake

For the car, the method of shaking the body can judge the performance of the shock absorber. It can also be judged by the shaking state of the vehicle front and rear after emergency braking.

3. Temperature check

The shock absorber converts the mechanical energy of the wheel and body vibration into heat energy, which is emitted in the form of heat, so as to achieve the purpose of attenuating vibration. The more vibration energy absorbed, the higher the temperature of the shock absorber. When the absorbed energy of the shock absorber is saturated, the temperature basically no longer rises.

4. Observation of oil leakage:

When the shock absorber is working, the oil mist evaporating from the high-temperature oil is often attached to the cylinder wall, and the dust on the road attaches to it to form a layer of "sludge". This is normal and not caused by an oil leak. If there is not only "sludge", but there are also oil bursts or oil drops on the wall of the shock absorber and the lower ring, it means that the shock absorber is leaking oil.
